Nowadays, even the smallest piece of EV news creates a huge stir. And if an update includes a larger battery and increased range, expect a slew of questions and opinions. That is exactly what happened when New MG ZS excite unveiled the refreshed ZS EV. Sure, it appears to be more modern and "EV-like" now, but the design changes were brushed aside like extras on a movie set to make room for the elephant in the room, the extended range. After all, it is the most important aspect of an EV, and the only one buyers are interested in learning a lot about. So, let us begin with that.
The battery in the new MG ZS EV
Whereas the previous model had a 44.5kWh battery pack, the new ZS EV has
a larger 50.3kWh unit. It appears to be a minor gain of only 5.8kWh, but it is
quite significant. While claimed figures are frequently criticized for being
unrealistic, a direct comparison does provide some context. The older ZS, which
had a smaller battery pack, claimed 419km (ICAT) on a full charge, whereas the
new one claimed 461km (ICAT), a 42km increase. These figures are tested using a
specific test cycle so that real-world results will vary.
With a full charge, the updated ZS EV can travel 357 kilometers in Eco
mode, 340 kilometers in Normal mode, and 306 kilometers in Sport mode. These
figures vary depending on external factors such as driving style, ambient
temperatures, and the terrain you drive on. However, even in the real world,
the new ZS adds roughly 40km to the overall range, which for some buyers who
want to take their EVs out of town, is a very important and useful increase
that can mean the difference between arriving at your destination or getting
stuck just before.
Recharging the new MG ZS EV
The recharge time for a larger battery will also be longer, and it has
increased slightly with the updated ZS. The ZS can be charged from 0 to 100% in
8.5 to 9 hours using the 7.4kW AC wall box charger. A 50kW DC charger can
charge from 0% to 80% in 60 minutes. Then there's the regen, which, like
before, has three intensity levels on the new ZS. Even at its peak performance,
it needs to realize its full potential. If the regen is set to the mildest
first level and you come to a complete stop at triple-digit speeds, the
regeneration will only be to level 1 and not all of the regen force available.
Also, there is no indication of how much range you gain by using only the
regen, which could have been included as part of the digital instrument
cluster.
Performance of the new MG ZS EV
The larger battery pack has also increased power. The updated ZS EV now
has 176hp (33hp more than before) but a lower pulling power of 280Nm. According
to MG ZS Motor India, the power and
torque output have been tweaked to optimize the balance between the range and
performance of the larger battery. Speaking of which, despite the increase in
power, the new ZS EV performs nearly identically.
However, it feels brisk and zippy to drive. Surprisingly, even in Eco
mode, the ZS EV has enough power to close small gaps and overtake them. Normal
and Sport are obviously more enthusiastic, but you never feel the need for
extra grunt while in Eco, and you also get a little more range, so it's best to
use that mode as the default setting to balance range and performance nicely.
The new ZS EV handles similarly to the previous model in an easy but engaging
manner. It's light and pleasant to punt around town, and most owners prefer it
that way. At city speeds, the ride has an underlying firmness, but once the
speed is increased, it settles down very well. Overall, this is a very
comfortable and easy-to-drive vehicle.
